Description[]
A pond-god of a reform school and orphanage for children taken from false-faith families in an attempt to rehabilitate them before adulthood. He was used by the school as an example of a "safe" god, and was worshiped by the orphans for "trickling so sweetly and keeping the gentle goldfish swimming in his waters."[1]
Notable Events[]
Carpenter was sent to The South Glottage Reform House after her Nana Glass was killed by the police. Here the orphans were taught to worship safe, sterile gods, such as the Saint Electric and Augustus.[2]
Young Carpenter, raging from being taken from her family and the imprisonment of her brother, attempts to pray to Augustus for vengeance, asking him to drown the reform house in the name of the Trawler-Man. Her prayers have no effect.
When Em triggers a flood in prison by calling to the Trawler-Man, the event has an effect on the pond. The morning after the flood, all of the pond's goldfish are dead. This proof that all waters are truly connected, as well as the feeling of being seen, reignites Carpenter's faith in the Trawler-Man.[1]
The implications of this event are unclear; some interpret this as Augustus being a minor facet of The Trawler-man, while others see it as The Trawler-man overcoming the influence of the lesser god.
